Getting on Schedule

  • It's much easier to write at night as everyone prepares for bed so I will get on schedule now.

Today we visited the Terra-Cotta warriors site. WOW!!! It was unbelievable. It's amazing to see the history you have read about in front of your face. There are really no words to describe it. We have pics on WeChat so check them out if you're on there. I could have visited the souvenir shops all day. There was so much to look at! We also visited a manufacturing plant that makes the replicas of the warriors and custom furniture. Can you believe that Eric wouldn't buy me a $15,000 table? I mean, it did contain the shipping prices! ;-) Their pieces were beautiful. They even had jade on some of their pieces. The rugs, oh, I could go on and on about the furnishings. We didn't get to see but one room because Miss Elise had a meltdown because I wouldn't let her follow her friend outside. Eric had to physically carry her out of the place. Every single person in there was looking at us or they were talking to her. Sigh... Once we were in the van again, she was fine. We met up with the Maglot's at the site and Elise was thrilled to see Eva again. Elise did well for having to go through all of those buildings and not really knowing what we were doing. Our guide speaks in English to explain the history, plus Elise is a bit young to understand it all. We negotiated for a few gifts afterwards (I was a bit proud of our skills) and headed to KFC for lunch. French fries, chicken, yummy! This was Elise's first time so that was fun! We all headed back to the hotel afterwards because we were exhausted. One...for lack of a better word, interesting thing that happened was our friend Tracey was asked if she was kidnapping her daughter. Lilly was screaming at the top of her lungs, in Chinese, that she wanted her mommy. Luckily, our guide was with her and handled it. They now have a copy of their adoption certificate on hand.

Our original plan was to snack in the room for dinner. Elise had noodles, (by the way, Elise eats constantly. I kid you not. She will have a sucker in her hand while eating a snack bag of oreo's. While playing video games. Because we're awesome parents like that. It's survival weeks!) Abi attempted mac and cheese and I was about to get soup when Jon texted and asked if we wanted Papa John's. Um, YES! (Cute backstory: Last night at dinner when they brought out our food, Eva said, "Daddy, I want Papa John's." Adorable!) We went to their room, chanting "Go Eva! Go Eva!" (because that's what everyone does when they go to see the Maglot's right?)  to order dinner for all of us and Tracy and Tommy. (Who still need your prayers! So much crying!)  We ordered some then found out that store was closed. Jon finally located one and he and Eric took off in a taxi. For quiet some time. I enjoyed visiting with Jess while they were gone but we were both quiet curious as to where their adventure took them. Jess received a text from Jon saying they were at Pizza Hut. Ha! We went with it and were pleasantly surprised how much it tasted like home. We had fun laughing over crazy experiences at dinner. We just made it back to our room and we're about to have a bath and attempt bed time..prayers please!

The name talk...it went very well!! She was at first resistant to the idea but we explained that Peter did the same thing and she would always be An Xin Hong but that in America people would refer to her as Elise. We are calling her Elise Xin Hong for now to ease into the transition. We are so thankful for how well it went. She liked finding out who she was named after. We haven't discussed her middle name but we waited a bit on that with Peter also. She will get to know my aunt, whom she's named after, and it will make it that much sweeter. Thank you for the prayers!

Prayers...Bed times, of course. Our friends and their daughter. Elise has never ridden on a plane and does not want to. Friday could be interesting. It's a 3 hour flight so we'll be easing into the longer flight issue that comes the next week. This may sound like a silly prayer but pray our plane home has more movie and tv options. Our first flight had almost none for kids and we've watched all we can. Fifteen hours, stuck in a seat, with a child that doesn't speak your language and is not fond of flying or where you're going with no movie or tv options? Not fun..I'm a scary flyer anyways so I need the distraction!

We are enjoying our time with the Maglot's so much. Their Chinese is so impressive. It's fun to hear what they have been doing and comical at the same time to hear about their every day life. ;-)

Well, I'm off to grab more towels and attempt bath and bed time! For those going to ELO, have a great first week back! We miss you all! We can't wait to hear about the boys first day back, their day with friends and youth. Abi is sad to miss it all but she's having a great time here. She's been a huge help and Elise is smitten with her. Thank you all for praying!!

  • Karri Freeman Hyko Well, I'm a little late in reading this, so hope your night went smoothly. Will be praying for your friends and the flight on Friday. Peter and Dalton had a blast playing airsoft in the woods. We did CFA for lunch, of course, then they ate pizza on the way to Mosaic! Peter was VERY well behaved in class (we had a guest speak on drones) and so kind and courteous the entire day. Love him!

  • Cheryl Fortier Praying for you! Peter did well in science too. We made DNA models and I said take them home to show mom. He immediately said my Mommy's not home! He told me he was having fun while mom is gone!
