Acting...how do you explain it?
Andrew, our almost 9 yr. old, loves to watch the Cosby Show. (and Bonanza but that has nothing to do with this post.) We have watched movies and/or shows before where there are "married" couples on there. While watching the Cosby Show, he has questioned me about the "parents" being married. I told them that "no, they are acting. They are married to other people off of the show. This is their job." He looks at me very strangely. Which I can understand. I have wrestled with this issue also. If you kiss someone on screen, stage, etc. are you cheating on your spouse? So many say it's acting, but look at how many actors/actresses leave their spouse for a co-star. I guess my question is..how do you explain this? I don't mind them watching this show because it does teach good values. It shows a loving household, one where kids are disciplined and the parents care for them and for each other. I think that is why it bothers him so much. The "parents" on this show have a lot of chemistry together and do a great job portraying what a marriage be should be. (outside of they never go to church. What's up with that?) But I am not sure how to answer his un-asked question, "Then why do they kiss and act like a married couple?" Any suggestions would be appreciated!

when dave and i do plays and musicals we are very clear on our audition sheet about not kissing another actor, even if it means giving up a role that we are offered. we don't want to touch that problem with a 100 foot pole. there was on play where dave had to simply hold another girl "lovingly" and it just about threw me over the edge. that's of course when i can remind myself of what a loyal and devoted husband he is, but for "real" actors who do love scenes and such, they're "reasoning" is usually that when you are actually filming it's nothing like what ends up on the screen, there are so many people and lights and cameras and cuts.. the editors make it all look like one smooth love scene. but still just to see the final result of what comes of it all would be impossible to watch-maybe that's why a lot of actors don't watch their own movies/shows.
